Jasmine checked that her clothes were neat and straight one last time before sliding timidly out of the car. She followed her parents up the long driveway to the small house on the hill.

On either side of the driveway was a wire fence keeping out the dry grass and the few kangaroos that were scattered under trees avoiding the heat. She didn’t see any cows which was strange. This was a cattle station after all. There were two other cars parked at the bottom of the hill. Jasmine’s father smiled at her mother, “The others must already be here.” “Oh it’s been so long since we last met!” Jasmine’s mother replied in her mild Chinese accent.

She turned her head in Jasmine’s direction, “These are good friends of mine, Jasmine. Please make sure you’re on your very best behaviour.” Jasmine nodded her head nervously. I wonder what their daughter is like? Jasmine thought. Mother said all these friends have daughters. That makes three girls my age plus me… I hope they’re nice. Jasmine stood behind her parents at the front door. Her father rang the doorbell.
